Donna Vanderlip - Course Designer
Right from the start, Bruce impressed me with his professionalism in his approach to mentoring young people, an approach that not only inspired confidence but encouraged young people to go further in their passion for filmmaking. As an educator, I observed how Bruce quickly assessed what skills each of the young people were bringing to their mentoring sessions and then he planned his lessons accordingly.
Bruce clearly took a great deal of time to plan for his sessions in advance, to make sure he created a strong curriculum to support students in learning the technology involved in film. The curriculum he developed included framing the talent, working with the camera in various settings, deciding on how the story needs to be treated, lighting, sound and editing. He provided both background information as well as hands-on experiences. Bruce used his knowledge about the learning process to ensure skills were consolidated while also presenting meaningful challenges. Bruce celebrated the successes of his students in myriad ways. He attended film shoots and provided further support when they experienced difficulties with their projects. He introduced them to other community members involved in filmmaking and remained available when any of the youth felt they had a question for him.
